Best Travel Lens For Canon 70D

by Chicara
(London UK)

Hi there

I have a Canon 70D that I use for hobby portrait photography mainly (with the fab but mega heavy Sigma art 50-100 1.8). I am going to Alanya Turkey and want to take a lighter lens, as well as something for landscape shots etc. Any best recommendations?

Thanks so much!

HI Chicara!

Thanks so much for taking time to ask a question about the best lens to go with your Canon 70D for travel photography. I hope you find my answer helpful.

Canon 70D Travel Lens

Many photographers like to travel lightly for travel photography. The 70D is a good choice because it's one of the smaller Canon DSLR cameras and takes the smaller EF-S lenses.

Canon 70D with 18-135mm lens makes a good combo for travel

Both the EF-S 18-200mm and the Canon EF-S 18-135mm would be great choices for you if you want to keep it simple and have just one lens for your travel photography. It can be a bit of a hassle to have to switch lenses when you're on the run.

EF-S 18-135 Vs. 18-200 for 70D Travel

Both the have similar size and weight specifications which are important for you. Both of these Canon lenses zoom out to 18mm which is plenty wide for landscapes and scenic photos with wide angle views. The 18-200mm lens has more reach which you may find desirable if you're shooting distant objects, wildlife or birds.

I'm biased toward the Canon EF-S 18-135mm Nano lens. I used it on my 70D and now keep it attached almost always to my 90D since I upgraded cameras. I find the 135mm focal length (equivalent view as a 216mm lens) on the crop sensor 70D to be powerful enough.

I must admit I don't know much about the Canon EF-S 18-200 lens. I'm always suspect of the potential increase in barrel distortion and pin cushion effect of lenses with such longer ranges of zoom magnification. I've referenced to other related article that I think would be worthwhile for you to read, below my signature.

The standard Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and my favorite wide angle "crop" lens, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm are smaller, lighter, and good for traveling, but are too limited in the zoomed in telephoto focal lengths.

I hope that helps.

STM vs Nano USM
by: Chicara

Hi

Thanks for the detailed reply! So I actually still my original kit lens that is the 18-135 but it is the STM version. Is the Nano USM version worth the upgrade? I did find my STM just not as sharp as my favorite Sigma, but I keep reminding myself of what I need here!

It'll be real tough to match the sharpness of a sigma art lens. My 18-135mm satisfies my needs for sharpness, but that's subjective.

I found that my 100-400 mm mk2 was very rarely off my camera
