Best Long Telephoto Lens For Canon Rebel t3 Camera

"What is the largest lens I can get for a EOS T3? I have the Canon camera with a 200mm lens, but sports action pictures seem to need a little more. I realize this is a good entry level camera which is where I am at, but the 200 I have now does I good job, but I would like a little better.

Rick"

Hi Rick!

Thanks for asking about the best long lens options for you Canon t3 camera.

The Canon Rebel t3 camera is an APS-C crop camera. That mean all of the EF and EF-S lenses will fit on the t3 and be fully compatible. You'll be using a 1.6x crop factor to figure out the angle of view you get with any of these lenses on your Canon Rebel.

There really is no limit on what length lens you attach to your t3, whether it's a 500mm, 600mm, or 800mm lens. They are all compatible. It's really more about how much money you are able to shell out.

Best t3 Long Lens

I really like my EF 100-400mm Lens for shooting sports, but that is a pro "L" lens and is pricey. I like the versatility of the 4x zoom. I don't know what your budget is for a good sports lens. The 55-250 likely does not make enough of an upgrade from your existing 200mm.

You should look at the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens. That has about 50% more reach than your 200mm. It's super affordable, although it's not particularly fast.

You could also go off-brand and instead of a Canon lens, look at the Tamron or Sigma 150-600mm lenses built with a Canon mount for your t3 camera.

Ultimately, the longer and faster (large maximum apertures) you go, the higher the price tag. The super telephoto lenses from Canon might be overkill. It depends on the level of sports and the size of the venue.

You might also check out my article on the Best Lens For The 90D because the 90D has the same size sensor, albeit with a higher pixel count.

To understand the differences between the EF and EF-S lenses on your t3 cmaera I recommend you watch my video on that. Ef verses EF-S Lenses.

Please let me know what longer lens works out best for you and your Canon t3.

Thanks,
Bruce
