Hi Greg,

Thanks for asking about what Canon camera body to use with a Canon RF 100-500MM lens. Fortunately, you can choose any one of the Canon "R" mirrorless cameras.

At the time of this post, you can choose the Canon R, the Canon RP, Canon R5, or Canon R6. Stay away from the Canon "M" mirrorless cameras.

You're probably interested in shooting sports or wildlife with your Canon RF 100-500 lens. You need to be aware of which of the Canon R mirrorless camera bodies is compatible AND has a fast enough shutter speed. All four of the Canon R camera bodies I listed have fast enough shutter speeds.

The RP is the most affordable full frame Canon camera body and has a 1/4000 second fastest shutter speed. The Canon R, Canon R5, and Canon R6 all have fastest shutter speeds of 1/8000 second.

Frame Rate

In addition to camera compatibility with your Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L is USM Lens and Canon mirrorless camera bodies with fast shutter speeds, it's important to consider frame rate. How many frames per second (FPS) do you want?

The Canon RP is a bit lame for fast action photography with your RF 100-500, coming in at only 5 frames per second.

The Canon R has a respectable, but not compelling 8 FPS.

Both the R5 and R6 have blazing fast 20 FPS frame rates, insuring you've got every spit second of action captured with your super telephoto Canon 100-500mm lens.

I have an R5 and an RF 100-500.
I can only say it’s a killer combination, probably the best kit for birds in flight that Canon have ever made.
I am still tweaking the settings although if you are familiar with the Canon DSLR menu system, it’s all very logical
