Filters for Photographing Solar Eclipse
For Canon Rebel t6i, t7i, and t8i

Canon Rebel t8i

Canon Rebel t8i

Briefly, trying to encourage photography for my two granddaughters I bought them Canon Rebel T6i and the T8i, and I have the T7i. I have asked everyone I know about what filter we need for the solar eclipse in our area in 2024. No one seems to know. Several years ago, I was late in the game and had to make filters with expensive "film" I bought--it was an awful process and I want the right "real" filters.

At this time I have to review their lenses, I know I need a 58mm filter for "up to 300" lens. I need to find out their lens size, I forgot but they have either the 300 or 400 size.

You can tell I am not a professional--
Thank you

Hi MJ!

Thanks for asking about the best solar eclipse filter for your Canon Rebel t6i, t7i, and t8i cameras. Just reminding all our readers that safety is important when photographing a solar eclipse. That goes for protecting your camera sensor and even more importantly for preventing damage to your eyesight.

Solar Eclipse Photography Warning

A solar filter must be used on the lens throughout the partial phases as well as the full eclipse stage for both photography purposes and safe viewing. Never view a solar eclipse with your unprotected eyes.

It's very surprising to newbie eclipse photographers and the general public that you shouldn't use a neutral density (ND) filter for solar eclipse photography. ND filters only block visible light. The sun also emits harmful UV and infrared radiation that ND filters won't block.

Canon Rebel Solar Eclipse Filters

You can purchase solar eclipse filters at most major camera retailers or mass marketers like Amazon. I have no personal experience with solar eclipse filters, so I can't recommend one specifically. Prices range from around $70 up to around $300 for the pro-caliber solar lens filters.

You just have to match up the screw-on filter size for the specific lens you are using on your Canon t8i, t7i, or t6i. See my RESOURCES PAGE for the vendors I use. The best place to find the most reviews on Canon gear is Amazon.

Good Luck MJ.
Let me know how you make out.

Thanks,
Bruce
